Omdurman, Sudan

Omdurman is the largest city in Sudan. It is located in Khartoum State, and is one of the component in the metropolis of Khartoum, which includes also Khartoum proper and Khartoum North. The city is on the west bank of the River Nile, to the northwest of Khartoum. It has a population of 2.4 million people.

Once a small village in the 19th century, Omdurman began to grow after Muhammad Ahmad, the Mahdi, made it his military headquarters. The Mahdi made Omdurman the capital. After he died, the settlement continued to grow around his tomb. Then in 1898 the British, led by Lord Kitchener, defeated the Mahdi's forces, and restored Khartoum as capital.

Today Omdurman has merged to be one of the major cities within the Khartoum metropolitan area. In terms of population, it surpasses the capital. Visitors will find here a number of tourist attractions worth a visit.
