Orange Walk Town is today the second most populous town in Belize after Belize City. Located on the northern part of Belize, where it is the district capital of Orange Walk District, the town has a population of 13,400 people (2011 estimate). It is located on the left bank of the New River.

Orange Walk Town has been inhabited since pre-Columbian times, when it was the Mayan city of Holpatin. As such, it is home to the biggest Mayan temple of the pre-classic period. Orange Walk Town came into being in the 19th century when it received an influx of native and Mestizos fleeing the Yucatán peninsula due to the caste war of 1847-1901.

The Mestizos introduced the planting of sugar cane to Orange Walk Town, and today it is one of the main industries. In recent years tourism has also become an important component of the economy.

Visiting Orange Walk Town

Self-drive seems to be the most practical way to reach Orange Walk Town. It is an hour from Belize City by car.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
