The Serra da Capivara National Park in Brazil is home to rock shelters where there are 25,000-year-old cave paintings. These rock shelters are among the oldest human communities in South America.

The Serra da Capivara National Park was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 15th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in Cartage, Tunisia, on 9-13 December, 1991.
