Chiloé Island is the second largest island in Chile, and the biggest in the Chiloé Archipelago. It is located on the northern part of southern Chile, and is second only to Tierra del Fuego. It is however the biggest Chilean island not shared with another country.

Chiloé Island covers 8,394 sq km (3,240.9 sq mi) and has a population of 160,000 (2011 estimate). It measures 190 km (118 mi) in length and has a maximum width of 65 km (40 mi). The capital and largest city on Chiloé Island is Castro, which as a population of 40,000.

Chiloé Island is part of the submerged extension of the Chilean coastal range running parallel with the Andes Mountains. The mountain range on Chiloé Island follows that of the Chilean coastal range, running north-south through the island.

Chiloé Island has a rich diversity of wildlife. A number of conservation projects are carried out here to protect its fauna, which includes blue whale, sei whole, sea lions, marine otters, Chilean dolphins, Peale's dolphins, Magellanic penguins and Humboldt penguins.

Visiting Chiloé Island

There are ferry services between Puerto Montt on the Chilean mainland and Pargua on Chiloé Island. You can fly to Puerto Montt by flight from Santiago, and then take the bus which goes on board the ferry, to reach Pargua.

    Private reserve on the south end of Chiloé Island.
