Coquimbo is a port city in Elqui Province, Coquimbo Region, Chile. It is about 10 km (6 mi) to the south of La Serena, and is within the Greater La Serena area, which has a population of 400,000 people (2012 estimate). The city of Coquimbo itself covers 1,429.3 sq km (551.9 sq mi) and has a population of 163,000 people.

The first royal governor of Chile, Pedro de Valdivia, established the city of Coquimbo at the site of a natural harbor in 1550. The city grew rapidly in the 19th century, when it became a major harbor for the export of gold and copper. During this period it attracted immigrants from England.

Today Coquimbo is an industrial city and shipping hub. Tourism is still at a developing stage. The city does have a number of beaches such as Guanaqueros and Tongoy. Its economy is based on the shipping industry as well as fruits, copper and wine.
