Isla Negra is a place along the Chilean coast within the El Quisco commune in Central Chile. The name, which means "black island" refers to a group of dark outcrops offshore. Isla Negra was named by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda who lived there, building his home that is now the most famous attraction in the area, Casa de Isla Negra.

Casa de Isla Negra was originally owned by a Spanish soldier. Neruda bought it in 1939, and embarked on extensive renovation, creating a lengthy structure that reflects the very geography of Chile itself. He filled it with his often outlandish collection of art object, some 3,500 in total, throughout the house. Neruda lived there with his third wife Matilde Urrutia until his death in 1973. The house is today open to the public as a museum celebrating the life of Pablo Neruda.

Isla Negra is also a popular tourist destination in Chile. It is frequented by middle-class vacationers from Santiago and Valparaíso. Following in the footsteps of Pablo Neruda, there is now a community of writers, artists and artisans in Isla Negra. Catering to the rise in tourists to the area, a number of restaurants and souvenir shops have opened in Isla Negra. The area also has a brand of wine by the same name, available in both red and white varieties.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
