Linares is the provincial capital of Linares Province, in Maule Region, Chile. The city covers 1,456.7 sq km (562.4 sq mi) and has a population of 86,000 people (2012 estimate).

Linares was founded in 1794 by Ambrosio O'Higgins, the Viceroy of Peru and father of Chilean statesman Bernardo O'Higgins. It is in the fertile Chilean Central Valley where the rivers Ancoa, Putagán and Achibueno flow through it. The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, humid winters. Hottest month is January with temperatures of 31°C (87°F) while coldest month is July, with minimum of 4°C (39°F).
