Villarrica is a city in Cautín Province, Araucanía Region, Chile. It covers 1,291 sq km (498.5 sq mi) and has a population of 47,000 people (2012 estimate). Surrounded by scenic views, it has become a popular tourist destination for both summer and winter sports. Among the tourist activities here include water sports and fishing.

Villarrica was founded in 1552 by Jerónimo de Alderete, and was originally called Santa María Magdalena de Villa Rica. Two years after it was established, Alderete died, resulting in the abandonment of the settlement. Five years after that it was reestablished by García Hurtado de Mendoza.

Villarrica was destroyed once again 1603, during the Arauco War between the Spaniards and the local Mapuche people. It was rebuilt in the 1880s, and the present city dates from this rebuilding. This time the government attracted European settlers including mainly Swiss, German and Austrian immigrants to resettle in the area. The German roots of the immigrants are still celebrated on 1 August, which is the Swiss National Day.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
