Pilar is a city on the southwestern part of Paraguay, near the border with Argentina. The city covers 1,130 sq km (436 sq mi) and has a population of 30,000 people (2011 estimate).

Pilar was founded in 1779 by Pedro Melo de Portugal and was originally called Villa del Ñeembucú, after the river Arroyo Ñeembucú, a tributary to the Paraguay River. It was renamed Villa del Pilar four years later, in honor of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar (Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar) in Zaragoza, Spain.

January is the warmest month in Pilar, when the average high temperature tourches 33°C (92°F). July is the coldest month, with average low temperature of 12°C (53°F). March receives the most rain, at 163 mm (6.4 in).

The most usual way to reach Pilar is to take a bus from Asunción.

    The main Catholic church in the city. It is a festive place during the feast day of Our Lady of Pilar on October 12 every year.
