Saint Martin is an overseas collectivity of France in the Caribbean. It is located on the northern part of the eponymous Saint Martin Island, which it shares with Sint Maarten. It covers 53.2 sq km (20.5 sq mi), which is roughly two thirds of the island, and has a population of 37,000 people (2012 estimate). Its capital and largest city is Marigot.

Saint Martin was formerly part of Guadaloupe and was therefore part of the European Union. In 2003, its population voted for secession from Guadaloupe. The formal separation took effect of 15 February 2007.

Tourism is one of the main components of Saint Martin's economy. French is the most commonly spoken language and unlike Sint Maarten, English is less used here. Saint Martin also has fewer high rise condominiums compared to Sint Maarten, but makes up for it with a good deal of natural beauty.
