Konduz کندز

Konduz (کندز), also written as Kunduz, is a city in northern Afghanistan. The capital of Kunduz Province, it is connected on the major highway to Mazar-e Sharif, Kabul, and the border with Tajikistan. Konduz has a population of 95,000. It is located at an elevation of 397 m (1,302 ft). The city is in the Afghanistan Standard Time, which is UTC+4:30.

The history of Konduz goes back to at least the 3rd century AD, when it was the site of a Buddhist learning center known as Drapsaka. In the early 20th century, under the governance of Sher Khan Nasher, it was one of the wealthiest provinces in the country, deriving its wealth for the Spinzar Cotton Company, which is still in existence.

Konduz was the last major city to be under the control of the Taliban to fall to the US-backed Afghan Northern Alliance. It is a major agricultural city and producer of wheat, rice and other crops.
