Taktsang Monastery, also known as Taktsang Dzong or Paro Taktsang, is one of the most spectacular fortress monasteries in Bhutan. The name Taktsang means "tiger's lair". It is a famous Tibetan Buddhist monastery that is perched on a 1200-meter high cliff above the Paro Valley.

Taktsang Monastery was built in 1692 around a cave known as Taktsang Senge Samdup. This was where Guru Rinpoche, also called Padmasambhava, spent meditating for three months during the 8th century. Guru Rinpoche is credited with having brought Buddhism to Bhutan, and is regarded today as the patron deity of the country.

The temple at Taktsang Monastery is called the Temple of the Guru with Eight Names, or Guru mTshan-brgyad Lhakhang. The builder was Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye. Today a cultural icon of Bhutan, Taktsang Monastery is the venue of Tsechu, a Bhutanese festival honoring Guru Rinpoche. It takes place in the Paro valley around March or April every year.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
