Chengde is a prefecture-level city in Hebei Province, China. The urban limits cover 709 sq km (273.7 sq mi) within a prefecture of 39,519 sq km (15,258 sq mi). The urban area of Chengde has a population of 457,000 (2011 estimate) while the prefecture-level city a population of 3.6 million people. Chengde had a 2004 GDP of RMB 30 billion.

Chengde is located in northeastern Hebei Province. It experiences a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters here are bitterly cold, with average January temperature of -9.1°C (15.6°F). The warmest month is July, when the average temperature is 24.5°C (76.1°F). July is also the wettest month, with 145 mm of rain.

As a travel destination, Chengde is best known for its Mountain Resort, the summer residence of Manchu Emperors during the Qing Dynasty and a World Heritage Site since 1994. It was built between 1703 and 1790, and sprawls over a mountainous area of some 5.6 million sq meters. It includes a number of national treasures including the Putuo Zongcheng Temple and the Puning Temple, which houses the world's tallest wooden statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.

Planning your trip to Chengde

The most practical way to reach Chengde is either by road or by train. The fastest train leaves Beijing at approximately 8:00 am in the morning and arrives there at 12:30 pm. There are also buses from Beijing to Chengde. The fare starts at around ¥70.
