The Hong Kong Cenotaph (GPS: 22.28156, 114.16053) commemorates those who died in wars fought by the British. Located between Statue Square and the Hong Kong City Hall, it was constructed in 1923. Its design is almost exactly the same as the London Cenotaph at Whitehall, except that the Hong Kong one has eight Chinese characters on it. The cenotaph was originally erected to remember those who perished in World War I, but subsequently those who died in World War II were also commemorated by it.

As the Hong Kong Cenotaph is closely tied to British rule in Hong Kong, no official ceremonies have been held there since the colony reverted by to Chinese rule in 1997. Nevertheless informal celebrations by the locals and British servicemen continue to be held here from time to time.

The Hong Kong Cenotaph is on the Map of British Cenotaphs

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
