Chhattisgarh is a state in the central-eastern part of India. Covering 135,194 sq km (52,199 sq mi), it is the 10th biggest state in India. The name "chhattis garh" means "thirty-six fortresses", and refers to the thirty-six historical principalities that form the state.

Chhattisgarh borders Madhya Pradesh to the northwest, Maharashtra to the west, Andhra Pradesh to the south, Orissa to the east, Jharkhand to the northeast and Uttar Pradesh to the north. It has a population of about 21 million people, making it the 17th most populous state in India. The state capital and largest city is Raipur.

Chhattisgarh is a primarily rural state. Only 20% of its population live in an urban area. The people speak that Chhattisgarhi language, a dialect of eastern Hindi. It is recognised as one of the official languages of Chhattisgarh.

Chhattisgarh comprises a fertile plain border on the north and south by hills. About 44% of the state is still forested. The Mahanadi is the main river flowing through the state. Other major rivers include the Hasdo, Rihand, Indravati, Jonk and Arpa.

Among the tourist attractions of Chhattisgarh are its ancient ruins, Buddhist sites, beautifully carved temples, caves with rock paintings, magnificent waterfalls and palaces. The state is still off the beaten path as far as foreign tourists are concerned.

How to go to Chhattisgarh

By Plane
Raipur City Airport (RPR) is the main gateway to Chhattisgarh. Located 20 km to the south of the city centre, it is served by Air Deccan, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines. Most of the flights are connections with other cities in India such as Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.

By Train There are train services linking Raipur with New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, among others.

By Road
Raipur is about 300 km from the next major city, Jagdalpur. The journey will take at least five hours. During the summer season, the roads are dusty and very hot.
