Jharkhand झारखंड) is one of the newer state of India, being created out of the southern part of Bihar as recently as 2000. It covers 74,677 sq km (28,833 sq mi) in eastern India. Jharkhand borders Bihar to the north, West Bengal to the east, Odisha to the south, and Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to the west. The state has a population of 27 million people (2011 estimate) with Hindi being the official language. The state capital is Ranchi while the biggest city is Jamshedpur.

The name Jharkhand means "land of forests". It is a state that is still predominantly forest covered. Much of the state is on the Chota Nagpur Plateau.

How to go to Jharkhand

The Grand Trunk Road (National Highway 2) that goes between Delhi and Kolkata cuts through the northern part of Jharkhand state. NH 6 also passes through the state connecting Kolkata with western India.
