Fukui City 福井市, Fukui Prefecture

Fukui City (Japanese: 福井市) is the capital and biggest city in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. It covers 536 sq km (207 sq mi) and has a population of 267,000 people (2012 estimate). The city faces the Sea of Japan on the northern part of the prefecture.

Fukui City was established under its present name in 1889. The area however has been inhabited for a thousand years. Its present city limits date to 2006, when it annexed the towns of Miyama and Shimizu as well as the village of Koshino.

Planning your trip to Fukui City

The Hokuriku Expressway as well as Japan National Route 8 are the two main access to Fukui City. Other highways to Fukui City include Japan National Routes 158, 305/365, 364 and 416.

You can also take the train to Fukui City. Its city station is served by the JR West Hokuriku Main Line. It is also the terminus for the JR Etsumi-Hoku Line, the Fukui Railway Fukubu Line and the Echizen Railway Mikuni Awara and Katsuyama Eiheiji lines.
