Honshu is the main island of Japan. The name Honshu itself means "the main state". Honshu measures 1,300 km (810 mi) in length, and is 230 km at its widest.

The northernmost point in Honshu is at Shimokita Peninsula, in Oma, Aomori prefecture. The southernmost is Cape Kure in Kushimoto, Wakayama prefecture, which is at the south-central part of Honshu, and not at the westernmost, which is Bishanohana in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi prefecture. The easternmost is Cape Todogasaki in Miyako, Iwate prefecture.

Covering an area of 227,962 sq km (88,017 sq mi), it is the seventh biggest island in the world - bigger than Great Britain, and slightly bigger than Minnesota. It is also the second most populous island in the world after Java.

Honshu has a population of about 104 million people (2011 estimate). Of these, about one in four persons live in the Kanto plain, which is where the Greater Tokyo Area is located. This, and the Kansai area in the southern central part of Honshu are where most of Japan's industries are located.

Honshu is divided into five regions containing a total of 34 prefectures, including metropolitan Tokyo.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
