Imabari 今治市, Ehime Prefecture

Imabari (Japanese: 今治市) is the second largest city in Ehime Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku, Japan.

Imabari was only officially founded in 1920, although the area has been important since the feudal period, as it is a strategic point for the control of the Seto Inland Sea. The present city limits are the result of an expansion in 2005 which annexed a number of surrounding towns and villages, giving Imabari an area of 419 sq km (162 sq mi) and a population of 172,000 people (2012 estimate).

Today Imabari is renowned for its shipyard. It has the biggest ship building company in Japan and the third largest in the world. Its northern and eastern coastlines are dotted with maritime facilities including a container port and twenty maintenance and construction shipyards. The city also has an important cotton processing industry, and produces 60% of the towels made in Japan.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
