Chiyoda (千代田区) is one of the special wards of Tokyo Metropolis. It covers 11.64 sq km (4.5 sq mi) and has a population of 46,000 (2011 estimate). Chiyoda is one of the eight central wards of downtown Tokyo which includes Minato, Shibuya, Chuo, Shinjuku, Toshima, Taito and Bunkyo. Although it is one of the most important special wards of Tokyo, it is also the least populated. This is because much of Chiyoda is occupied by government buildings.

The Diet is located in Chiyoda, as is the Prime Minister's official residence, the Supreme Court and high rises housing the headquarters of major corporations. The Imperial Palace is also in Chiyoda, and it alone occupies 12% of the land area.

Chiyoda ward was created in 1947 by merging the former Kanda ward with Kojimachi ward. Chiyoda is bordered by Chuo to the east, Minato to the south, Shinjuku to the west, Bunkyo to the north and Taito to the northeast.

How to go to Chiyoda

The JR Yamanote Line is the train to take to go to Tokyo Station in Chiyoda. You can also take the subway to the Otemachi Subway Station, which sprawls over a huge area under the Manunouchi District between Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace. The station is served by the Chiyoda Line (C-11), Hanzomon Line (Z-08), Marunouchi Line (M-18), Mita Line (I-09) and Tozai Line (T-09).

Kasumigaseki Hub of Japan's administrative agencies.
Kojimachi Older residential and commercial neighborhood to the west of the Imperial Palace.
Marunouchi One of Tokyo's traditional commercial centers.
Nagatacho Location of the Diet of Japan and Hie Shrine.
Otemachi Site where a number of key financial institutions as well as newspapers have their headquarters.
Yurakucho Neighbourhood between Ginza and Hibiya Park, lined with izakaya bars and yakitori restaurants.

What to see in Chiyoda

Hie Shrine Location of the Sanno Matsuri Festival, one of the three Great Festivals of Tokyo, locating opposite the Imperial garden.
Holy Resurrection Church 19th century Russian Orthodox Church in Chiyoda.
Idemitsu Museum of Art Museum with emphasis on Japanese traditional arts.
Imperial Palace Official residence of the emperor. While you can't go in to have tea with him, you can at least see the surroundings. In the vicinity are related sights including the Imperial Palace East Gardens, Kitanomaru Park and Chidoriga-fuchi Moat
Kanda Shrine Ancient shrine dating back to the 8th century which became highly regarded under the Edo shogunate.
National Theatre of Japan Theatre with regular stagings of traditional performing arts such as Kabuki and Noh dramas.
New Otani Art Museum Housed on the 6th floor of the New Otani Hotel, this museum has a small collection of Japanese and French artworks.
Tokyo International Forum An attraction in itself, this massive cutting-edge structure holds exhibits and conventions, but for casual tourists, it's the architecture that is the most interesting here.
Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art Museum with a modest collection of modern art.
Yamatane Museum of Art Museum showcasing modern Japanese-style paintings.
Yasukuni Shrine Shrine to Japan's war dead, this is the controversial shrine which invites worldwide condemnation whenever a leading politician pays a visit.
Yushukan War Memorial Museum Museum showcasing military equipment and Japan's version of the many wars it fought.
