Sumida (墨田区), Tokyo

Sumida (墨田区) is one of the special wards of Tokyo Metropolis. It is usually called Sumida City in English. Located to the northeast of downtown Tokyo, it covers 13.75 sq km (5.3 sq mi) and has a population of 240,000.

Sumida is bordered by Katsushika to the north, Edogawa to the east, Koto to the south, Chuo to the southwest, Taito to the west and Arakawa to the northwest. The Sumida and Arakawa rivers flow through Sumida, forming boundaries with neighboring wards in some parts.

Sumida ward was formed in 1947 with the creation of Tokyo Metropolis. Before that, it comprises the wards of Honjo and Mukojima within Tokyo City. Sumida itself refers to a town named after the river. It is located within Mukojima.

How to go to Sumida

Three subway lines operated by Toei serves the Sumida special ward. They are the Asakusa Line (Honjo Azuma-bashi and Oshiage Subway Stations), Shinjuku Line (Kikukawa Subway Station) and Oedo Line (Ryogoku Subway Station).

To reach Sumida by road, take the Shuto Expressway or National Highway Routes 6 and 14.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
