Uwajima 宇和島市, Ehime Prefecture

Uwajima (Japanese: 宇和島市) is a city on the southern part of Ehime Prefecture, in Shikoku, Japan. The city covers 469 sq km (181 sq mi) and has a population of 86,000 people (2012 estimate).

The history of Uwajima goes back to 1595, when the village of Itajima was established. In 1889, it was granted town status. Uwajima was given city status in 1921 after it annexed the village of Yahata. Since then, it merged with Miura and Takamitsu in 1955, with Uwaumi in 1974, and with the towns of Mima, Tsushima and Yoshida in 2005, when its present boundaries were fixed.

Uwajima is served by the Yosan Line of the Shikoku Railway. Stations in Uwajima served include by the train include Tachima, Iyo-Yoshida, Takamitsu, Kita-Uwajima and Uwajima. Alternatively, you can also take a bus from Matsuyama to Uwajima.
