Wakayama Prefecture (和歌山県)

Wakayama Prefecture (和歌山県) is a prefecture in the Kansai Region of Japan. It is the prefecture with the southernmost part of Honshu Island. Wakayama is 4,725 sq km in size. It is the 30th biggest of the 47 prefectures of Japan. If faces the Pacific Ocean to the south and has a coast facing the Inland Sea. It also borders Osaka Prefecture to the north, Nara Prefecture and Mie Prefecture to the west.

Wakayama Prefecture has a population of around 1 million people (2011 estimate). The prefectural capital is Wakayama City.

Wakayama Prefecture is the location of Koyasan, one of the sacred mountains of Japan which is inscribed as a World Heritage Site under Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Rainge.

Going to Wakayama Prefecture

Wakayama can be rather remote compares as it is off the main railway line between Tokyo and Osaka. You can get to Wakayama City by train from Osaka in an hour and two from Kyoto.
