Pavlodar (Kazakh/Russian: Павлодар), the capital of Pavlodar, is a city on the northeastern part of Kazakhstan. It is located 350 km to the northeast of Kazakh capital Astana, and 400 km upriver from the Russian city of Omsk along the Irtysh River. It has a population of around 332,000 people (2012 estimate).

As with many cities in Kazakhstan, Pavlodar began as an outpost of the Russian Empire. It was founded in 1720 and was originally called Koryakovsky. Its founding was to protect the valuable salt lakes in the area, and the city developed as a major salt producer.

Under Soviet rule, Pavlodar industrialized. It was a manufacturer of farm machinery and had aluminium as well as chemical industries. Due to the sensitivity of the industries in the city, Pavlodar was closed to foreigners until 1992, when the Soviet Union collapsed.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
