Plain of Jars Site 3 (Hai Hin Laat Khai) (27 December, 2005)


The Plain of Jars Site 3 is also called Hai Hin Laat Khai. It is located approximately another 10 km south of Site 2, near Ban Xiengdy (also written Bah Sieng Dee), in Phaxay district, about 20 km south of Phonsavan.

After seeing Site 1 and 2, we were determined to visit the third and final site. Once again, we met some resistance from our driver who eventually agreed to take us there.

The signboard from the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) stated that this site was cleared of UXO between 27 January 2005 and 28 March 2005, and that they removed 22 pieces of UXO plus 6,863 pieces of scrap. 150 stone jars were recorded here. The site is close to one kilometer from the entrance. To reach it, we had to cross a bamboo bridge, and then walk along the path across the paddy fields. As harvest season has just passed, most of the fields were dry.

Plain of Jars Site 3 is fenced up with both bamboo and barbed-wire fencing. To enter, we had to climb over a bamboo staircase. I believe this is to prevent domestic animals such as cattle from wandering onto the site.

Having visited two earlier sites, we did not find anything new to discover here. In fact, I feel the jars in Site 3 is not as superior as those of the previous sites, particularly Site 1. so we spent just about half an hour stone jars. By then it was lunch time. Considering we had a long journey to drive to Luang Prabang, we had a simple meal of noodle soup directly from a roadside eatery.
