Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultanah Asma, Alor Setar

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultanah Asma (GPS: 6.13304, 100.3898) is a secondary school in Alor Setar, Kedah. Today it is located on Lorong Pauh off Jalan Langgar.

Established in March, 1922, SMK Sultanah Asma was originally called the Kampong Baru Girls' School, as it was located in the Kampung Baru neightbourhood of Alor Setar. It was established to educate the daughters of the royal family as well as high-ranking officials. Only in 1934 was it open to the public, and in 1964, pupils following the Malay stream was moved to a new school on Jalan Day. The school was renamed in honour of Tunku Ampuan Asma ibni Almarhum Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah, the Sultanah of Kedah, when she laid the foundation stone for the school building, which was completed in 1956.

In the beginning, the Kampong Baru Girls' School occupied the premises of Istana Sepachendera, which was the official residence of Che Sepachendera, the first consort to Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim. The palace was bought over by the Kedah state government for use as the school, which was established by YTM Tunku Ibrahim, also called Tunku Sulung, who incidentally was born in Istana Sepachendera.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
