Beris Lake

Beris Lake, Sik, Kedah (8 August, 2015)


Beris Lake (GPS: 5.93327, 100.77235) is a man-made lake in Sik District, Kedah. It was formed with the construction of the Beris Dam, or Empangan Beris, which was completed on 10 August, 2000. The dam provides drinking water to Kedah and Penang, and serves as flood mitigation for the surrounding area. Route 175 island-hops over the lake.

Beris Lake is tranquil and scenic. When I was there, I saw village boys bathing by the lake side. I learn that efforts are in the pipeline to develop Beris Lake as a tourist destination. Among this is the placing of Beris Lake Vineyard, by the lakeside. At Beris Lake Vineyard, I can sit at the wooden platform and admire the lake. I also learn that chalets are being constructed by the lake.

Beris Lake covers an area of 116 square kilometers. It submerges the surrounding terrain, which includes the now submerged Kampung Sungai Batang and Kampung Batu Seketol. The construction of the dam also required the relocation of some one thousand graves in 2002. Villagers from Kampung Batu Seketol, Kampung Sungai Batang, Kampung Ternas and Kampung Telaga Batu were all relocated to Bandar Baru Beris Jaya, which is about 10 kilometers from Pekan Sik.
