Candi Pendiat (Site 16)

Candi PendiatCandi Pendiat (25 July, 2015)

Candi Pendiat (GPS: 5.73848, 100.41406) is one of many ancient sites at Bujang Valley that was discovered by HG Quaritch Wales and his wife Dorothy in 1936. Originally located at Kampung Pendiat, where it was believed to have been built in the 11th century, Candi Pendiat was moved to the Bujang Valley Archaeological Park in 1974.

Only the base of laterite bricks were reconstructed, whereas the rest of Candi Pendiat was originally of wood. Found at the site of Candi Pendiat was a bronze box with gemstones and items made of gold. This is a Hindu candi, with a mandapa (outer porch) and a vimana (inner sanctuary). What is interesting is that the mandapa and vimana are separate from each other. Candi Pendiat is located next to Site 16A, discovered by Dorothy Wales. Site 16A turned out to be a Buddhist site, as a bronze standing Buddha was discovered there.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
