Hock Teik Soo, the Gurun Tua Pek Kong Temple (17 July, 2015)


The Gurun Tua Pek Kong Temple (GPS: 5.81657, 100.47833), known also by its official name Hock Teik Soo (峨崙福德祠;Penang Hokkien: Hock1 Teik1 Su2) is a major Chinese temple in Gurun, Kedah. The name Hock Teik Soo refers to the main shrine at the temple. It is flanked on either sides by subsidiary shrines. The temple has been expanded greatly since its founding in 1953. It features curved roof ridges characteristic of the Hokkien temple architectural style. The façade is of ornately carved granite, including intricate dragon columns supporting the porch.

Today the Tua Pek Kong Temple is one of the major landmarks of Gurun. Its feast days are on the birthday of Tua Pek Kong 大伯公 (29th day of the 3rd lunar month) and that of Sheng Wang Gong 圣王公 (1st day of the 7th month).

The temple was a serendipitous discovery for. Having just taken a wrong turn down a country lane, I saw the temple across from me beside the railway tracks, and drove around to search for it. It is located off the main road.
