Wat Chaisuwan Pradittharam, Sungai Petani (11 August, 2015)


Wat Chaisuwan Pradittharam (GPS: 5.59993, 100.46941; Thai: วัดไทยไชยสุวรรณประดิษฐาราม) is a Thai Buddhist temple in Sungai Petani, Kedah. It is often known simply as the Padang Temusu Siamese Temple, for that's the name of the neighbourhood it is located.

Wat Chaisuwan Pradittharam is one of the major temples in Sungai Petani. I visited it on a very wet day, and in fact arrived when it was pouring cats and dogs. My friend Michael and I parked and then we rushed into the temple compound, hurrying in from the rain.

The Wat Chaisuwan Pradittharam has a main hall, the viharn perhaps, with three seated Buddha statues in the middle, with a reclining Buddha statue to the right. Beside this main hall is a large shelter or pavilion where you find lots of smaller statues, including the gilded image of a Thai monk, probably a venerated abbot. Within the surrounding compound are numerous shrines to a plethora of deities. There is an eclectic fusion of Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism as well as Hinduism and Taoism, which is not that surprising or unique, as I have seen this at other Siamese temples too.

Getting there

Wat Chaisuwan Pradittharam is located off Jalan Permata Indah 1. From the main road (Federal Route 1), turn in to Jalan Permata Indah 1, go a short distance and turn right on the first turning right, go till the end and you arrive at the temple on your left.
