History of Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur and its neighbourhood

According to Mr Jeffrey Mong, the General Manager of Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur, the hotel sits on a plot that was originally among the earliest properties belonging to Tan Sri Dato' Seri (Dr) Yeoh Tiong Lay, founder of YTL Corporation. As the YTL business blossomed, the company bought up adjoining properties to reach the present plot size which was redeveloped into Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur. The hotel opened to guests in February, 2017.

Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur is located along Jalan Kamunting, which was named after one of the early tin-mining towns in Perak. The road connects on its northern end to Jalan Yap Ah Shak, named after the fourth Kapitan Cina of Kuala Lumpur, who succeeded Yap Ah Loy in 1885. Yap Ah Shak was Kapitan Cina until his demise in 1889.

The Jalan Kamunting neighbourhood, according to Mr Mong, was one of the early tin-mining areas of Kuala Lumpur. This is not surprising, considering its proximity to Jalan Ampang and the Klang River. According to history, the earliest batch of Chinese mining coolies arrived by boat on the Klang River and then trudge inland. Tin mining was carried out in the traditional method, with water from Klang River diverted and dammed. These mining dams gave the place the name "Ampang".

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
