Hotel Puri (9 July 2005)

Hotel Puri (GPS: 2.1965, 102.24522) is a hotel along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (formerly Heeren Street) in Malacca. The hotel is housed in a heritage building which was once owned by prominent Malacca Straits Chinese, Tan Kim Seng.

The original house occupied by Hotel Puri stretches 100 meter deep, from the street front to where the hotel kitchen is today. Within this length, it afforded three air-wells. There was also a well in the ground to supply the household with water - this in the days where pipe water was not yet a common feature. The well is still in existence, and is located near the entrance to the hotel cafe.

The building was erected in 1822, and was purchased by the famous Malacca-born Singapore philantrophist Tan Kim Seng in 1840 (when he was just 35 years old). In 1876 the building had become somewhat weathered, and was rebuilt by Tan's grandson, Tan Jiak Choo, at the cost of 14,000 Straits Dollars.

Getting there

From Dutch Square, cross Tan Kim Seng Bridge, then turn left into Lorong Hang Jebat. At the next junction, turn right to enter Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (Heeren Street). Hotel Puri is at no. 118, on the right side of Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
