Jalan Penarikan (Porterage Road), Negri Sembilan

Jalan Penarikan (GPS: 2.80783, 102.37427) or Porterage Road refers to a place in Negri Sembilan where boats were hauled from one river to another. The two rivers are Sungai Jempol and Sungai Serting. Jalan Penarikan served as a land link between the east coast and west. Until the town of Bahau was settled and established, the place used to be known as Denai Penarikan.

Sungai Jempol flows west into the Muar River while Sungai Serting flows west into Sungai Bera, which eventuary flows into the Pahang River. The distance between Sungai Jempol and Sungai Serting is only 300 meters. This allows boats from one river to be pulled overland to the other river, thereby avoid having to sail around the peninsula.

Jalan Penarikan had been discovered and in use since the 14th century, even before the Sultanate of Malacca came into being. It allows goods to flow through the hinterland villages on their way to the east coast and vice versa.

Jalan Penarikan was also used by the Siamese to launch an offensive on Malacca. A Siamese tombstone dating to AD 1265 had been discovered there. The route was also used by Hang Tuah when he fled with Tun Teja to Pahang.
