Sungei Palas Boh Tea Centre (GPS: 4.5161, 101.41608) is a visitor centre of the Boh Tea plantation in Sungei Palas, Cameron Highlands. It is one of two tea houses run by Boh Tea Plantations. Altogether, the Boh Tea Plantation has a total of 8000 acres planted with tea. In addition to Boh, another major tea plantation in Cameron Highlands is the Bharat Tea Plantation near Ringlet. The Sungei Palas Boh Tea Centre is the most popular of the tea centres in Cameron Highlands.

The Sungei Palas Boh Tea Centre has a museum providing detailed interpretation of the history of tea in Cameron, as well as the founders and present owners of the Boh Tea company. There is a visitor platform at the Sungei Palas Boh Tea Centre. It is attached to the tea kiosk. From the platform, visitors enjoy a panoramic view of the tea plantation while sipping tea and enjoying various pastries such as scones, puffs, pies and cheesecakes.

Due to the high number of visitors to the centre, a large car park has been created at the foot of the tea house. Visitors are to leave their vehicles there and make their way on foot to the tea house. The journey is about 350 meters up hill.

History of Boh Tea

The Boh Tea Plantations were started by John Archibald Russell, the son of a government official, in 1929. He partnered with A.B. Milne, an old tea planter from Sri Lanka, where tea is grown extensively in places such as Nuwara Eliya. With a concession of land from the government, the planters created the first highland tea garden in the then Malaya.

Today Boh owns four tea gardens in the country, namely Boh, Sg Palas and Fairlie in Cameron Highlands, and Bukit Cheeding in Selangor. The Boh company produces 4 million kgs of tea annually, equivalent to 5.5 million cups per day. They garner the lion share of the tea produced in Malaysia, which is 70% of all production.

I always enjoyed the old-style Boh tea kiosk before it became the new Sg Palas Tea Centre. The new facility is certainly much bigger. Moreover, it has great views of the surrounding tea plantations, and can accommodate more visitors. However it lacks the cosiness of the old Tea Kiosk, where you can warm up in a corner enjoying your favourite cup of tea with hot scones.

Sg Palas Boh Tea Centre

The Sg Palas Tea Centre is a recently expanded tea kiosk of the Boh Plantations. It is home to the Tea'ria souvenir shop and tea shop. Here, visitors are given free guided factory tours every thirty minutes. One may also savour the various types of tea produced by the Boh Plantations. The Sg Palas Tea Centre is open everyday except Monday, from 9:00am to 4:30pm. Admission is free. Factory tours are provided approximately every 30 minutes.
