Tasik Chini (GPS: 3.43054, 102.91045) is the second largest freshwater lake in Malaysia. Located in Pahang, near the Pahang River, and not far from the town of Pekan, it comprises twelve adjoining lakes. The area is home of the Orang Asli, who call the lake Laut, or sea. It was the first time in Malaysia to be recognised by UNESCO as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, in May 2009.

Tasik Chini is home to various types of fish including the lampam, sebarau and kelah. Regular monitoring of the quality of the lake water from 2008 to 2016 shows that it has in fact improved from Class III in 2008 to Class II in 2016. This is the result of regular river cleaning and checking river erosion that feed into Tasik Chini. According to the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Dato Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, a task force is set up with the intention of further improving the water quality of Tasik Chini to Class I.

To preserve the environment of Tasik Chini, the lake area has been divided into three management zones. At the centre, where the lake is located, is the Core Zone. Here, there is strict enforcement of activities is conducted to ensure minimal impact to the environment. Surrounding this is the Buffer Zone, which is managed to ensure that the lake is maintained in the natural condition. And surrounding the Buffer Zone is the Transition Zone, where people may live and work, but in an environmentally friendly manner.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
