Ipoh Railway Station

Ipoh Railway StationIpoh Railway Station (18 September, 2015)

The Ipoh Railway Station (GPS: 4.59712, 101.07263) is a lovely colonial-style structure was built in 1917 but was only completed eighteen years later, in 1935. I took the above photograph at dusk, as the sky was quickly darkening. I was with a group of AsiaExplorers members on a trip to explore the Mossy Forest in Cameron Highlands, and we stopped over in Ipoh on the way back to Penang.

The Ipoh Railway Station continues the theme of adopting what local writers incorrectly call the Moorish architecture (in fact, it is Mughal style architecture of India) that also dons the Kuala Lumpur Old Railway Station.

The Ipoh Railway Station is often affectionately known as the Taj Mahal of Ipoh. It is indeed one of the more impressive landmarks in Ipoh. Today the Ipoh Railway Station houses the Majestic Hotel - previously known as the Station Hotel Ipoh. A beautifully landscaped floral garden surrounds this charming building.

From the opening of the Ipoh Railway Station, it had housed the Majestic Station Hotel, until the hotel closed in 2011, after 76 years of operation. I had the opportunity of staying there when we visited Ipoh.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
