Malay College Kuala Kangsar (31 January, 2006)


The Malay College Kuala Kangsar (GPS: 4.77595, 100.93856) or MCKK, is where the cream of the Malay society received their education. I explored it along with the other heritage sites in Kuala Kangsar.

When it was first opened in 1905, under the name Malay Residential School, only the children of the Royal Family, high ranking Malay dignitaries and royal court officials were received. At that time, it operated in its original attap premises. The syllabus was a fusion of modern education with knowledge of Islam and Malay culture mixed in. The first headmaster was William Hargreaves, who before that (1891-1904) was the headmaster of Penang Free School. Originally called the Malay Residential School, MCKK had its first intake of 40 students. The name of the school was changed to Maktab Melayu, or Malay College in 1909. Hargreaves remained as headmaster until 1918.

Among the notable alumni of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar include Tun Abdul Razak, Hishammuddin Hussein and Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In 1929, the Malay College Old Boys Association was formed. During the Japanese Occupation, it was used by the Japanese Army as the Administrative Office.

In 1947, the college adopted the motto Fiat Sapientia Virtus.Fiat Sapientia Virtus, which means "Let manliness come through wisdom."

Today, the Malay College Kuala Kangsar is regarded as one of the best boarding schools in the country, and some of the Malay political and corporate figures hail from this institution. Among them was Dato' Onn Jaafar, one of the founding members of UMNO; the first Yang Dipertuan Agung, His Majesty Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Al-marhum Tuanku Mohammed; and the Deputy Yang Dipertuan Agung, His Highness Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah ibni Al-marhum Sultan Aladdin Sulaiman Shah of Selangor.
