Kinabalu Park, also called Kinabalu National Park and Taman Negara Kinabalu, is one of the first national parks in Malaysia. It was established in 1964. Kinabalu Park became Malaysia's first World Heritage Site when it was inscribed by UNESCO into the World Heritage List in December, 2000. It is located in Sabah, and covers and area of 754 sq km. The park surrounds Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Malaysia.

The Kinabalu region was first explored and documented by Hugh Low, who was also the first to climb Mount Kinabalu. The park is located in the Ranau district and is about 88 km from Kota Kinabalu. It is adminstrated by Sabah Parks, a conservation-based organisation established in 1962 to conserve the scenic, scientific and historic heritage of Sabah.

Kinabalu Park is located in 4 climate zones, beginning with lowland dipterocarp forest, graduating to montane oak, rhododendron and conifers, to alpine meadow plants and culminating with stunted shrubs of the summit zone. The peak itself is practically barren.

Getting there

There are buses between Kota Kinabalu and Kinabalu Park - you can enquire with your hotel or ask at the bus station in Inanam. On the way, you can see the mountain from the window if you sit on the left side of the bus. The journey takes about 2 hours and costs around RM15.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
