Tun Sakaran Marine Park, Sabah

Tun Sakaran Marine Park is the newest marine park in Sabah. Also known as Semporna Islands Marine Park, it is located at the entrance of Darvel bay, on the east coast of Sabah. Covering an area of 325 sq km, Tun Sakaran Marine Park is presently the largest marine park in Sabah. Along with its neighbouring islands, Tun Sakaran Marine Park has one of the best diving sites in the world. Within it are the islands of Bodgaya (795 ha), Boheydulang (313 ha), Sebangkat (51 ha), and Selakan (32 ha), and the sand cays of Maiga, Sibuan and Mantabuan. The largest island, Bodgaya, has peaks reaching the height of 455 meters.

Bodgaya was the first island to be made a forest reserve, as early as 1933. Boheydulang was then made a bird sanctuary. The islands were eventually gazetted as a national park in 2004, and is administrated by Sabah Parks.

Within Tun Sakaran Marine Park are twelve villages supporting a population of over 2000 locals whose main occupation are directly connected with the sea, including fishing and the farming of seaweed.

Getting there

The base for visiting Tun Sakaran Marine Park is the town of Semporna. From there, you should visit the Semporna Ocean Tourism Centre, a complex on stilts over the water. You can meet up with the tour operators offering trips and diving packages to Tun Sakaran Marine Park. Note that there is a conservation fee of RM40 to be paid for entering the marine park.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
