Bintulu (GPS: 3.17132, 113.0419) is a town in Sarawak. It is the capital of the 7220 sq km Bintulu District, within the Bintulu Division. It is about 215 km from Sibu and Miri, and 650 km from the state capital Kuching. Travelling by road between these towns can be done on the Pan Borneo Highway which goes through Bintulu linking it with other major towns of Sarawak and continues to Brunei and Sabah.

The discovery of natural gas offshore from Bintulu gave the town a boost, resulting in the construction of Sarawak's first deep-water port there. Bintulu's population grew from 70,000 in the 1970's to over 200,000 in the new millennium. Already it has surpassed Kapit and Sarikei to become the fourth biggest town in Sarawak behind Kuching, Miri and Sibu, and is expected to add another 30,000 inhabitants in the next 5 years.

History of Bintulu

Bintulu was originally part of Brunei. It began as a fishing settlement with a few Chinese shophouses, which are no longer standing. In 1861, it was ceded to James Brooke who was already the Rajah of Sarawak, ruling from Kuching since 1841.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
