Kuching Wetlands National Park, Sarawak

Kuching Wetlands National Park (GPS: 1.68898, 110.25115) is a protected mangrove forest in the Kuching Division of Sarawak. Gazetted in July 2002, it covers an area of about 66 square kilometers, and is the remains of the Sarawak Mangrove Forest Reserve, which used to cover 170 square kilometers.

Kuching Wetlands National Park is located 30 km from Kuching. Much of it covers the coastal, marine and freshwater ecosystems on the estuarine reaches drained by Sungai Sibu Laut and Batang Salak. Within the national park are tidal creeks and interconnecting waterways.

The national park has a rich biodiversity. Among the animals found here include the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus), the long-tailed macaques and the Silvered-leaf langurs. The mangrove delta is an important spawning area of the local fish and crustaceans. It is also a habitat for white-bellied eagles, mud skippers and horseshoe crabs. Estuarine crocodiles can also be found here, and on occasion, the Irrawaddy dolphin.

Getting there

It is possible to drive there from Kuching within an hour, via Damai Beach. Check with the tour operators in Kuching.
