Main Bazaar, Kuching

The Main Bazaar, as it is called, is one of the oldest roads in Kuching. It runs from the junction of Jalan Gambir on the west side to the junction with Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman on the east. This waterfront thoroughfare was where the earliest buildings of Kuching were erected. Until the big fire of 1884, the Main Bazaar is lined with timber shophouses with thatch roof. The fire destroyed much of these units, requiring a rebuilding of the shophouses here with bricks.

The Main Bazaar used to house the warehouses or godowns for goods being brought up from the river. Rickshaws and bullock carts would be parked along the road waiting for business while itinerant vendors peddle street food. Today the entire place has been very much sanitized and gentrified. There are antique and handicraft shops, but the only ships that arrive here nowadays are the river cruises and the tambang ferryboats.
