Faisalabad فیصل آباد

Faisalabad (Urdu: فیصل آباد) is the third biggest city in Pakistan after Karachi and Lahore. The city covers 1,280 sq km and has a population of 4.2 million people, within a 5,856 sq km (2,261 sq mi) metropolitan area with 5 million inhabitants.

Until the late 19th century, Faisalabad was nothing by a semi-desert area. Its distance from any rivers made irrigation difficult. The modern city was established in the 1870s when Captain Poham Young proposed its establishment. Canals were built to irrigate the area, enabling crops to be grown for the European market. At the turn of the 20th century its population was less than four thousand people.

Faisalabad was known by various named through its relatively short history. Originally it was called Chenab Colony. Then it was renamed Sandalbar, and then for much of its history, as Lyallpur. It was renamed Faisalabad only in 1977, in honor of the late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia.

As Faisalabad began as an agricultural city, and later on an industrial hub, it has much fewer tourist attractions if compared with Lahore or Karachi.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
