(GPS: 1.37475, 103.83735) is a church of the brethren assemblies in Ang Mo Kio
. It occupies a 4-storey building on Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4.
According to the Bethesda Hall website, the brethren assembly traces its roots in Singapore back to the 1860s, when believers met at the home of an English businessman by the name of Philip Robinson to study the Bible and to fellowship. In 1864, a room at Bencoolen Street
was rented for use assembly use. It was called Mission Room. A group of seven believers met there for the first time on 3 July, 1864 with a desire to follow New Testament teachings and to spread the Good News to non-believers.
Two years later, in July 1866, the believers decided to start a building fund so that they could have a more permanent address to fellowship. In fact, a building on Bras Basah Road
has been identified for the chapel, and on 30 September that same year, the Bethesda Chapel at 77 Bras Basah Road opened for service.
The following year, a Christian missionary from Bristol, England
by the name of John Chapman arrived in Singapore. He had earlier established assembly work at Farquhar Street
(read also Farquhar Street Mission House
), in 1860.
Church planting effort of Bethesda Chapel resulted in the founding of another assembly in Katong in 1932. After the Second World War, a few more assemblies were also established. By the 1980s, the mother church at Bras Basah Road was deemed to crammed for its expanded congregation, so a new site had to be found. It was determined that the assembly should be relocated to a more central part of the island, and so Ang Mo Kio was chosen for the new site.
The believers began to fellowship at Bethesda Hall in Ang Mo Kio since 1986. By 2017, there are some 500 believers who fellowship regularly there, attending the Lord's Supper as well as other weekly ministries.
