Serangoon Travel Tips

Serangoon (Simplified Chinese: 实龙岗, Traditional Chinese: 實龍崗; Pinyin: Shílónggǎng; Tamil: சிராங்கூன்/Cirāṅkūṉ) is an urban planning area of Singapore. It is bordered by Sengkang in the north, Hougang in the east, Toa Payoh in the south, Bishan in the southwest and Ang Mo Kio in the northwest. Serangoon is further divided into 7 neighbourhoods or subzones, namely Lorong Chuan, Seletar Hills, Serangoon Central, Serangoon Garden, Serangoon North, Serangoon North Industrial Estate and Upper Paya Lebar.

It is not sure how the name Serangoon comes about, but it is believed to have been settled by the early part of the 19th century. It is not sure also, whether it was named after Serangoon Road, or the other way around, but it is unlikely to be named after the Serangoon River, as the river was formerly known as Rangon River.

There is a theory that the name Serangoon may have come from the Malay phrase "serang dengan gong", which means "attack with gong". This however remains just a theory that still requires further substantiation.
