Dushanbe (Tajik: Душанбе) is the capital and largest city in Tajikistan. It covers 124.6 sq km (48.1 sq mi) and has a population of 679,000 people (2012 estimate).

Dushanbe was known as Dyushambe until 1929, when it was renamed Stalinabad (Сталинабад) until 1961, when it took on its present name. It is located at the confluence of the Varzob river and Kofarnihon river, in an area where human habitation has been traced back to the 5th century BC.

The name Dushanbe means "Monday". This is because it is the site of a Monday market. A mere village at the turn of the 20th century, it was upgraded to town status in 1925, and made the capital of the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Under Soviet rule, Dushanbe rapidly grew and modernized.

The fall of the Soviet Union brought a period of instability, with the Civil War in Tajikistan raging from n1992 to 1997, during which the city was badly damaged. Today it is on the path to recovery.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
