Chanthaburi Province จังหวัดจันทบุรี

Chanthaburi Province จังหวัดจันทบุรี is a province on the Eastern Region of Thailand. The province is sandwiched between the coast of the Gulf of Thailand and the mountainous hinterland. It covers 6,338 sq km (2,447 sq mi) and a population of 517,000 people (2012 estimate). It ranks 34nd in size and 56th in population.

Chanthaburi Province is bordered by Chachoengsao Province to the northwest, Sa Kaeo Province to the north, Rayong Province to the west, Trat Province to the southeast and Cambodia to the east. The highest point in the province is the 1556m Soi Dao Nua peak.

Chanthaburi Province is divided into ten districts including provincial capital Chanthaburi Town (Mueang Chanthaburi), Khlung, Tha Mai, Pong Nam Ron, Makham, Laem Sing, Soi Dao, Kaeng Hang Maeo, Na Yai Am and Khao Khitchakut.

Chanthaburi Province today has a population of about 480,000 (2011 estimate). It was occupied by the French from 1893, following the Paknam Crisis, to 1905, when Thailand relinquished ownership of the western portion of Cambodia. The province has a substantial number of Vietnamese who are Catholics. They sought refuge there during the anti-Catholic persecution of Cochin China between the 1920's and 1940's.

  1. Catholic Church of Chanthaburi
    Church for the substantial population of Catholic immigrants that moved to the province during the anti-Catholic persecution of Cochin China.

  2. City Pillar Shrine
    Shrine that dates to the founding of Chanthaburi Town. It must have been rebuilt a number of times. The present structure dates to 1981.

  3. King Taksin the Great Shrine
    Shrine built to venerate King Taksin the Great. The nine-sided shrine has a pointed spire resembling a royal hat. It was built in 1920.
