Lamphun Province จังหวัดลำพูน

Lamphun Province จังหวัดลำพูน is one of the provinces of Thailand in the Northern Region. It is bordered by Chiang Mai Province to the north, Lampang Province to the east and Tak Province to the south. The province covers 4,506 sq km (1,740 sq mi) and has a population of 404,000 people (2012 estimate), ranking it 49th and 48th in terms of size and population, out of a total of 76 provinces.

The main geographic feature of Lamphun Province is the Ping River, one of the rivers that form the Chao Phraya River. The province is surrounded by mountain ranges, with the Thanon Thong Chai Range to the west and the Khun Tan Range to the east.

Lamphun Province is the location of the ancient city of Haripunchai, which was the northernmost city of the Mon kingdom of the Dvaravati period. The city is where modern-day Lamphun is located. It was captured by King Mengrai of the Lanna Kingdom in 1281. It also came under Burmese rule over two centuries before coming under the rule of neighbouring Lampang, which was a vassal state to the Kingdom of Siam.

Lamphun became a separate province in the late 19th century, with the provincial capital being Mueang Lamphun (Lamphun Town). The province is divided into 8 districts or amphoe. Apart from Mueang Lamphun, the other amphoe are Mae Tha, Ban Hong, Li, Thung Hua Cang, Pa Sang, Ban Thi and Wiang Nong Long. The districts are subdivided into 51 subdistricts or tambon and 551 villages or muban.
