Loei Province จังหวัดเลย

Loei Province จังหวัดเลย is a rural, sparsely populated province on the Northeastern Region of Thailand. It covers 11,425 sq km (4,411 sq mi) and has a population of 625,000 people (2012 estimate). It ranks 14th in size and 70th in population, among the 76 provinces of the kingdom.

Loei Province is bordered by Laos to the north, Nong Khai, Udon Thani and Nong Bua Lamphu provinces to the east, Khon Kaen Province to the south, Phetchabun Province to the southwest and Phitsanulok Province to the west. The province is mountainous, though the provincial capital, Loei, is in a basin. The Loei River flows through the province to empty into the Mekong River.

Loei Province is divided into 14 districts or amphoe, namely Mueang Loei (Loei Town), Na Duang, Chiang Khan, Pak Chom, Dan Sai, Na Haeo, Phu Ruea, Tha Li, Wang Saphung, Phu Kradueng, Phu Luang, Pha Khao, Erawan and Nong Hin. It is subdivided into 89 subdistricts or tambon and 839 villages or muban. The province dates back to 1853, when the town of Loei was founded by King Mongkut (Rama IV). The province itself was established by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1907.
