Maha Sarakham Province จังหวัดมหาสารคาม

Maha Sarakham Province จังหวัดมหาสารคาม is a province in Isan, the Northeastern Region of Thailand. It is geographically flat, with only some hills on the northern and eastern fringes, making it an idea place for growing rice. The Chi River provides irrigation to the province.

Maha Sarakham Province is bordered by Kalasin Province to the northeast, Roi Et Province to the east, Surin Province to the south, Buriram Province to the southwest, and Khon Kaen Province to the west and northwest. It covers 5,292 sq km (2,043 sq mi) and has a population of 940,000 people (2012 estimate). This makes it the 42nd biggest and 14th most populous province in Thailand.

Maha Sarakham Province is divided into 13 districts (amphoe) including the provincial capital, Mueang Maha Sarakham, along with Kae Dam, Kosum Phisai, Kantharawichai, Chiang Yuen, Borabue, Na Chueak, Phayakkhaphum Phisai, Wapi Pathum, Na Dun, Yang Sisurat, Kut Rang and Chuen Chom. The districts are subdivided to 133 subdistricts (tambon) with a total of 1,804 villages (muban).

Maha Sarakham Province traces its history to 1865, when the town of Maha Sarakham was established, originall as part of Roi Et province. It was separated out as a province in 1868.
